The first jai alai fronton in the United States was added on to the Hialeah Race Course near Miami in 1924.
Jai Alai enjoys popularity in Florida as a gambling alternative to horse racing and dog racing.  There are six frontons throughout the State: Dania Beach, Miami, Ocala, Fort Pierce, Orlando, and Hamilton County.
Things didn’t go so well in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
The sport only seemed to thrive in the states when you could bet on it.  So the MGM in Las Vegas tried its luck with the Basque-born sport in 1978. They closed the fronton by 1980.
